STITCH ACTION ONLINE WORKSHOP - FEBRUARY 2025
This online workshop, Stitch Action, offers a taster of the art of hand embroidery, designed to spark your creativity and introduce you to the rhythmic and meditative world of hand stitching.
In this session, we’ll explore embroidery as a versatile tool for drawing, mark-
making, and creative expression. You’ll experiment with simple hand stitches, learning
how to adapt them by varying threads, scales, and spacing. We’ll focus on the tactile joys of creating, emphasising the pleasure of working intuitively and freely, without the need for precision or prior experience.
Practical demonstrations will guide you through the basics, showcasing how even the simplest techniques can create rich textures and patterns. This session is perfect for complete beginners or those looking to rekindle their love of stitching in a relaxed, friendly environment.
Delivered from the comfort of your home, this workshop provides an inspiring introduction to the possibilities of hand embroidery. It’s a chance to
slow down, explore your creativity, and discover the potential of stitch.

About your tutor:
Richard is a visual artist whose practice-led research delves into time, geology and cosmology. He crafts intricate, shifting forms and installations through textile-based works. Richard studied at Manchester School of Art before completing a Textiles MA at the Royal College of Art in 2008, where he now teaches.
Richard’s research is practice-led and ongoing, driven by a deep fascination with the language of time, geology and cosmology. He explores these themes primarily through textile-based work, particularly hand stitching. Through his making, he delves into repetition and the nuanced expressions of sameness and difference within it. These works map space and visually represent the passage of time, challenging traditional definitions of embroidery. Recent projects explore our connection to material, place, and deep time, with a special focus on his family's mining heritage – a lineage rooted in materiality and labour.
